Should you keep a journal?

Every day that you surf the internet, you are told how you should look, feel and act. So why pay attention to more advice? Shouldn’t you just follow your gut instincts and do what is right for you?

How do make these choices? Is this not an inward reflection based on your experiences, education, and skills? The Encarta dictionary defines “Wisdom” as “the ability to make sensible decisions and judgments based on personal knowledge and experience”.

So how have you accumulated this wisdom? What influence or interests have led you in this direction? What mistakes have you made that have forced you to make better choices? Keeping a journal will help you do much of this. A journal is designed to help you reflect over your life as it is felt from your perspective. There are many other reasons to write a journal including:

  • chronicling impactful events
  • forgiving oneself and others
  • learning from previous mistakes
  • serving up criticism without judgment
  • setting aside chapters as milestones for goals
  • putting yourself in the shoes of others – “If I were president, I would”
  • determining courses of action based on self-reflection and previous experience
  • developing a metamorphosis of self

In addition, many will tell you that in order to successfully “market yourself”, you must brand yourself. So how better to determine your real goals, interests and desires based on you! Can you develop one symbol based on your life? If so, make this symbol your journal cover page.
